How is Data Warehouse Management Evolving in 2022?
Businesses today manage over ten times the amount of data they handled just five years ago (Dell). Not only is the amount of data changing, so is the way we obtain, use and store it. Good data warehouse management is now more crucial than ever, but what does that look like in 2022?
The importance of good data management
With so much data available, some organizations find themselves overwhelmed. In fact, 93% of IT decision-makers say that data storage and management complexity is impeding digital transformation (ESG).
When data is stored and managed properly, it can be used to develop products and services, improve customer experiences, analyze trends, and so much more. However, this value can vanish through poor management when data becomes lost, out of date, unorganized, or irretrievable.
As Forbes explains, “managing data is as critical as having data”. Without the right data management solutions, the gap between where companies are and where they want to be widens, especially when it comes to companies processing large volumes of data.
Just how much data are we all collecting?
Businesses might find themselves collecting data from AI, IoT, mobile, and all manner of other areas that didn’t exist just a few years ago. The huge volume of data being captured around the world is almost incomprehensible.
Let’s take the Internet of Things (IoT) as an example. According to Statista, by 2025, the total data volume of connected IoT devices worldwide will reach 79.4 zettabytes. The sheer size of this makes processing, storing, and leveraging data from different devices a complex task
So, when businesses create a data warehouse management strategy today, what should they look for?
The new data management approach
A business’ approach to data management needs to come from its objectives. Looking at strengths and weaknesses, businesses can discover what’s working well and what needs to be changed to achieve their goals. This might be focusing on analytics, increasing security, or improving data retrieval, and then working out the best way to achieve it.
Importantly, these components then become part of the data management strategy. This means focusing not just on how you currently manage data, but what you’re doing for the future, too.
In a recent report, ESG presented seven aspects that should be covered by an effective data management strategy. These cover how the data is:
- Stored
- Protected
- Mobilized
- Analyzed
- Accessed
- Secured
- Governed
Your data strategy impacts almost everyone in the company to some degree, from the front-desk colleague trying to retrieve a customer’s data to the decision makers looking at future goals.
Creating a strategy that benefits all these people might sound like a big task, but outsourcing your data management can be a highly effective solution. It means access to experts in a scalable and cost-effective way.
What’s more, with automation, previously large-scale tasks become more manageable, this includes areas such as data processing, backups, and load balancing. So, your DBA’s time can be spent on other important areas.
Moving to the cloud
There are plenty of options when it comes to database management systems, and it looks like cloud-based solutions are here to stay. This can reduce or avoid the need to increase in-house capacity, which might involve costly equipment, adapted storage, or more.
There are many routes that companies can take if they do decide to move to the cloud, but one solution that stands out for 2022 is Snowflake. Snowflake is a cloud-agnostic solution, meaning it limits reliance on any one provider. The architecture is built to switch between providers, use multiple clouds at the same time, or work with your current cloud architecture.
What’s more, Snowflake’s bottom-up approach makes it one of the stand-out data-warehouse-as-a-service solutions. It is highly scalable, needs minimal input from DBAs, includes data sharing, and focuses on security. This makes it a great solution in a wide range of tech areas.
