HR in the Tech Sector: Challenges and Solutions

As the tech sector grows and shifts, human resources need to adapt accordingly. The right HR strategies can drive positive change in the right direction. However, there are unique challenges that need to be met along the way, including talent shortages, burnout, and retaining employees.
Biggest HR challenges in the tech industry

1.     Employee burnout

Burnout isn’t a new concept. Burnout can affect anyone, from entry-level employees to C-level executives. So, are businesses dealing with it effectively?

The rise of four-day work weeks, well-being apps, and mental health days seems like a step in the right direction. However, MIT Fellow Michael Schrages says that these moves often amount to tactics that manage pain points rather than strategies that address larger issues.

Experts speaking at the MIT webinar discussed the need for sustainable productivity. This means healthy workplace and workforce inputs that lead to healthy business outputs.

2.     Attracting Top Talent

Digitization is happening in new ways across industries and sectors; the pandemic accelerated digital adoption by several years. As tech opportunities open up in new fields and existing IT roles develop, professionals can have their pick. This isn’t necessarily bad news for businesses, either.

As Mckinsey predicts, companies that create a winning value proposition could see a “surplus of quality candidates from a larger pool” meanwhile those that fail to appeal will face a bigger talent shortage.

3.     Retaining employees: avoiding a talent shortage

One of the biggest challenges in recent years has been dubbed ‘the Great Resignation’. Employees are stepping down, changing roles, and looking at what new, better opportunities could await them.

Reports from around the world suggest this isn’t a localized phenomenon, either. In the UK, a recent survey found that 69% of workers were feeling confident about changing jobs within a few months. Last year in the US, 47.8 million workers left their jobs voluntarily, the highest number since the record-keeping began in 2001.

Departing employees leave gaps which, as discussed above, are particularly difficult to fill. What is more, research suggests the costs may extend beyond the obvious talent shortage. It takes 28 weeks for a new hire to reach “optimum productivity” at a cost of £25,200 per employee.

So, it is important to attract the right talent in the first place using expert tech recruitment skills, and to retain that talent with opportunities and a positive culture.

HR trends in the tech sector

Upskilling

The number of tech-related roles is growing. Estimates suggest the global number of digital jobs will grow from 51 million in 2021 to 190 million in 2025. Meanwhile, the digital skills gap is still prevalent.

Some of these new roles may be filled externally, but it is important to consider talent from within, too. Upskilling employees can bring value and benefits to the company. In fact, a PwC study found that companies with the most advanced upskilling programs saw three times the improvement in innovation. 60% of respondents also saw an improvement in corporate culture.

Outsourcing through specialists

Growing businesses know what they need, but they don’t always know how to get there. Outsourcing and working with specialists can help you achieve your goals effectively.

Having access to the right talent pools can help you find, hire, and therefore retain the right talent for your company. It’s important to work with tech outsourcing specialists who understand the sector, where to find the right talent, and exactly what your company is looking for.

This helps companies to stay scalable and save time (as well as money) by filling vacancies with the right candidates.
